Dev Horch by Johnny Liu
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Devin Horch is a synthesizer player, a member of Coto and the Plagues, and the founder of Horch Records, established in 2020. Through Horch Records, he expands on his film influences pushing eerie undertones into new corners of musical experimentation. Inspired by the soundtracks of the '70s and '80s, Horch draws from legendary groups like Tangerine Dream, Chrome, King Crimson, Throbbing Gristle, DAF and composers like Piero Umiliani, Francois de Roubaixe and Johann Johannsson. Beyond curating and releasing a collective of like-minded musicians, he also takes a hands-on role in the visual editing of all music videos released through the label.
“My last name is German and it means Listen. For the longest I was not proud about being German cus of the nazi stigma attached to it until I discovered the radical movement of art and music that came out post WWII. Krautrock, industrial post punk. All the experimental synth music coming out. The youth was hunting racist and nazi and taking back their identity back in Berlin and other parts of Germany. It started making me proud to be German and into synthesizers. I grew up listening to hip hop and punk rock and have always had a hard stance on racism. Fuck Nazi’s and Fuck Racism!! So I started finally embracing my last name Horch or Listen.”
